Albrecht Dürers> Christlich-mythologische Handzeichnungen

One of the first large and elaborate undertakings by the lithographic institution maintained by Johann Christoph Freiherr von Aretin (1772-1824) and Alois Senefelder (1771-1834) in Munich was the facsimile of Albrecht Dürer's marginal drawings (1471-1524) in the so-called "Prayer Book of Emperor Maximilian I" (Augsburg, 1513; 2 L.impr.membr. 64). The 43 sheets with reproductions of Dürer's marginal drawings, without the prayer book's text and in different colour print in line with the original, appeared in seven instalments. The pen lithographs were produced by the draughtsman Johann Nepomuk Strixner (1782-1855). In addition, the work contains a title page, Dürer's self-portrait from 1500 in pen and chalk lithograph, an autograph preface by Alois Senefelder dated 16 February 1808, as well as a printed list of the reproductions. The publication was enthusiastically received. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) expressed himself exuberantly in a letter to Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi (1743-1819) dated 7 March 1808 and a positive review appeared in the Jenaische Allgemeine Literatur-Zeitung on 19 March. The copy comes from the collection of lithographs by Franz Maria Ferchl (1792-1862), which forms the basis of the "Lithographica" subject founded in 1905 in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek and was probably acquired by the Königliche Akademie der Wissenschaften (Royal Academy of Sciences) and given to the Königliche Hof- und Staatsbibliothek (Royal Court and State Library) in its entirety in 1857 .
